One of the best series of 2008, in my opinion ^^. D.I.E (古靈精探) came across as quite a weird name for a series and didn’t really appeal to me, but this all changed as soon as I watched the first episode.
I didn’t have a really high opinion of Sonija Kwok (who plays Madam Ying 刑晶晶), but D.I.E definitely changed my mind. I enjoyed every bit of the character portrayed by her; I think tomboy characters appeal to me. Roger Kwok plays the role of police officer Yue Sir (于子朗) with supernatural powers, aiding him in the cases he is following. As well, he has transformed totally from the silly character “Ah Wong” into an over-protective brother of Margie Tsang, who acts as his older sister Yue Chi Ching 于子晴. Besides ‘Madam Ying’ and ‘Yue Sir’ ending up together, the series also includes a ‘side’ couple, where Margie Tsang pairs up with Derek Kwok (Cheung Ching Yee 張正義). I was a bit iffy with this pairing at first, but the more I watched the series, the more this couple grew on me.
Kenneth Ma was casted as Hugo 成家雋, whom I extremely disliked in the beginning. However, just like Margie and Derek’s coupling, Kenneth’s character became more bearable to watch. Perhaps my reaction towards ‘Hugo’ had something to do with watching “Survivor’s Law II” before D.I.E; I much more prefer his cruder character in that series.
There is one thing with this series which I don’t understand though and it’s the point of Nancy Wu’s character. Playing ‘Madam Ying’s’ younger sister, Momoko 邢珮珮 seems to be quite a well…useless character =/. I have nothing against Nancy though, I actually quite like her, although she really needs more fat on her. But besides helping her sister with one of the cases, I really can’t remember what else her character contributed towards the story. Maybe it’s just me and my horrible memory.
And how can I forget the ghost who continually followed ‘Yue Sir’, helping him out in some very sticky situations. Ng Siu Yee 吳小宜, acted by Kitty Yuen, plays a big role in bringing ‘Madam Ying’ and ‘Yue Sir’ together ^^.
Overall, a highly enjoyable series :). I still haven’t gotten around to watch the alternate ending, but I’m glad they filmed one, since it provides a way for a sequel to be filmed. 10/10 for this fantastic series, and I’m eagerly awaiting D.I.E II.
